An Orthotic service sees people who need appliances to help with their positioning, walking and comfort. Examples of these appliances are: moulded foot insoles, foot up splints, specialist footwear, soft collars or a WalkAide.
An Orthotist is the person who you would see to assess if an appliance is suitable for you. They would measure and fit the device as well as give advice.
Many people with MS alter the way they walk, they may find they develop a foot drop. The Orthotic service can assess to see if a foot up splint (AFO= ankle foot orthosis) would help with the foot drop or if a WalkAide device would be suitable (see video below to see what a WalkAide is).
Hereford has a small orthotic team, if you feel you would like and benefit from a referral, please ask your MS Nurse or Consultant.
