Brand name: Mayzent.
Generic name: Siponimod.
Who takes it?:
Adults with early Active Secondary Progressive MS: People who have activity on an MRI scan and also continue to relapse.
Mayzent must not be used during pregnancy, women who are of child bearing age must use effective contraception during treatment and for 10 days after stopping it.
Mayzent may not be suitable if you have an active cancer, or severe problems with your heart and liver.
Mayzent should not be used if you have a peanut or soya allergy.
How is it given?:
Mayzent is a daily tablet.
For the first 5 days you have a reduced dose, on day 6 you increase to full strength.
If you have heart conditions, an ECG will be completed for 6 hours at the QE on the first day of the medication.
Who Monitors it?:
Screening bloods will be obtained prior to treatment. Also a saliva test will be completed, this is to determine how well Mayzent will be broken down in your body, and this will help us get the correct dose for you.
3 months after starting treatment we will arrange an eye test to check for macular oedema, if you have a pre-existing health condition that affects the eye.
Regular monitoring bloods will be arranged. You will be informed when they are due, we will ask you either to attend your Gp practice or the MS Nurse home phlebotomy service will collect them. The MS Nurse phlebotomy service, can come to your home environment or after negotiation with your employer, at your work place.
At each MS Nurse appointment you will be asked about your Mayzent:
- If you have missed any tablets.
- Have any side effects.
- Had any infections.
- Noticed changes in your vision.
- Review your blood pressure.
- Asked about any new moles ect.
Side effects:
Lowing of the white blood cells.
Slower heart rate.
Cold sore.
Basal cell carcinoma
Macular Oedema
Raised blood pressure
Travel:
This medication does not need to be kept in your hand luggage when travelling abroad, however we suggest you do, due to main luggage occasionally being lost or delayed.
Vaccine:
Whilst on Siponimod we advice that you do not have Live or Live-attenuated vaccines, please call us for further advice.
